XP Upgrade
XP Upgrade
Okay so I upgraded to XP. I have two issues since doing that. First is that i have no sound. Message in control panel sound NO AUDIO DEVICE. Second, something with my graphics. Which is onboard. When i try to start CTS for example it says: Your video card reports that it does not support 3d graphics. I can't get into my Utility Tray. Both are onboard my motherboard. Basically with my small computer skills i would say i would need the drivers for them? Which i have the website and location of those drivers saved. I just want to make sure that is the correct way to fix this issue or if there is more that i need to do. Please Do not reply unless you have the solution. Thanks.

Re: XP Upgrade
Did you do a clean install of XP, or just upgrade it from your previous version of windows? Upgrades are always disasterous. Even if your Windows CD says Upgrade, it'll still do a clean install. You may need your old windows disk and/or your old windows CD key.
The key here when doing a clean install is SAVE EVERY FILE THAT IS REMOTELY IMPORTANT TO YOU first. Double and triple check that you saved EVERYTHING not applications, just the files. Any pictures, Documents, your whole heat folder, etc. It's a good practice to have this stuff backed up somewhere other than your hard drive, anyway.
If you feel unconfortable with doing a data backup and then a clean install, then don't do it, because once you loose something, you won't get it back.
Duster or Dave-O help me out here. I am much better doing it than explaining it.

Re: XP Upgrade
Yeah all i have to do was download these drivers. Thanks Dave. Took me awhile to do it. (The audio driver download worked right away though) Since when i tried to uninstall for then the system to find the correct drivers. Well during the upgrade all those files were deleted. So i had to download a zip file, install, which then i uninstalled. Then after that i reinstalled a new driver. Which worked but with particular download, the display properties could not be loaded. So then i unistalled that, found another file, downloaded that and it worked. I did it! Woohoo. Not bad for a douchebag.
Re: XP Upgrade
Actually Bover i would have to disagree. I bought the XP Upgrade with an existing operating system which was ME. By getting the upgrade version if there is a problem you can go back to ME if there are any issues. The only thing i backed up was my racing setups. All my photos are in my email. I don't download music. The only thing i use my computer for is Online Gaming which is 2 Games, and of course watching pornographic material. Plus everything i had, all files, folders etc. after the upgrade are in the exact same place i had everything. The only thing that changed was new sounds, displays functions etc. which is new with xp. Everything else is the same place. I only had to download 2 Driver files. Sound, and Graphics. I'm up and running and it looks cool, and i'm feeling groovy that i did it. Thanks for the help Guys!
Re: XP Upgrade
eh Petty.. Bover is right. Anytime when you upgrade to a new version of an o/s it's always a good idea to backup your system. For several years I've always told peeps, to automatically backup there systems periodically incase your harddrive ever crashes.
BTW: Great job today!

I don't think he was disagreeing with the need to back up, but pointing out that he had good results without doing a wipe and clean install.
Glad it worked out for you petty, and that you got the sense of accomplishment of doing it yourself. You are lucky however, I have seen upgrades really screw people's shit up. Fact that ur satisfied is the important thing.

Re: XP Upgrade
When XP first came out I used an upgrade disk on all my pc's. They all worked fine till I wanted to format after a new hd install. Then I discovered the upgrade disk doesnt work on a new install. Some of you will laugh at my work around. I took a floppy with windows 3.1 on it and put that on the HD first and then the upgrade worked. Won't work today since the floppys aren't equipped anymore.
P.S. Are you driving any faster now petty?

Re: XP Upgrade
Windows upgrade disk's will only work if..
1. You have a previous version on the computer already.... or
2. If you have the cd from the previous version (even if the previous version is an upgrade as well)
During the initial setup it will say if did not find a previous version of windows & ask if you have a cd or sometimes just a cd-key from the previous version..
Not necessary, but I would agree with doing a clean wipe, things often go wrong during upgrades, but it is good you had success!
