Big Risk
I keep seeing news stories about this worm that most people have and don't know about...and something really really big may happen on this wednesday. My computer has started to slow down lately and I'm rar'ing all my files and reformatting just in case. Keep a look out

Re: Big Risk
Is this another one of those virus hoaxes that always float around AOL and Email?
I once got one that had been forwarded at least a hundred times. It had the usual, "Microsoft and Symantec are tracking this threat which they just discovered yesterday" and "They as of yet don't have a fix" This particular hoax actually said "This virus will erase your entire hard drive and any floppies within 3 feet of your computer!"
The person who sent me this actually had as the subject "Wow, this sounds bad!"

Re: Big Risk
No, this is something that even Homeland Security is worried about. It's been a problem since like 10 million people had it in october last year. Microsoft made security patches for it, and now it has been sitting idle all this time but supposedly has a new code pushed onto it wednesday. It may be nothing...but for the hell of it why not back up stuff...especially since the risk is there all the time. People think that if they don't have their computer on wednesday they will be fine, but if something comes up with this thing--it will get you next time you boot up I'm sure

Re: Big Risk
Its always good to back up files... but as long as you have a good anti-virus & install Microsoft windows updates... You will not be effected by this... Always keep your anti-virus updated, check & double check..

I've always recommended condom usage. In this case, in keeping with the double-douchebag technique, and second one may not be a bad idea. Takes care of those messy spills.

Re: Big Risk
Yeah, I read up on it. It appears that if you keep windows and your security software up to date, you won't have a problem... the biggest at risk machines are illegal copies of windows, since they don't get patched by microsoft.
Re: Big Risk
Don't let the government brainwash you more than they already have. You probably have one of those Homeland Security Kits just in case. LOL. We will find out tomorrow.

Conficker...Hardly knew her.
Re: Big Risk
In all seriousness...a way to check if your infected...
How Do I Know If My Computer Has It? Unlike other viruses, the stealth Conficker worm won't slow your machine or prompt virus warnings. Experts say one way to determine if you're affected is to try directing your browser to Microsoft.com, Symantec.com or McAfee.com. If you can't access those sites, you've likely been infected. You may also notice the automatic updates on your anti-virus software have been shut off.
If you are infected...visit a Microsoft-run site like OneCare.Life.com to access a free malware remover. (Sources: AP, cbsnews.com)

If I was smoking the same dope some of you do, I would be paranoid about it too. In YOUR worst case, you were motivated to have important files backed up like you should anyway. Very worst case, you'd have to do a clean reinstall of your system, simultaneously getting the cholestoral out of your computer. I don't see a real problem here.
