Caution Flags

Post by lepage71 »

We're curious about the level of interest in implementing caution flags in NHRL races.

Of course, yellows would be one of our more significant rules changes in recent memory. Some advantages of cautions could include tighter competition, new pitting strategies (2 or no tires would work more often), and more varied race strategies (for example, choosing a balance between speed vs. fuel). One possible disadvantage of yellows is that a race could feature a lot of caution laps, if the driving ever got out of hand, although this seems unlikely.

We've already asked a few league members about the idea and the response has been pretty positive.

How would cautions work in NHRL? We'd base our model around what Jes Rathbun does with his league, Hardcore Motorsports. Jes himself has graciously offered to serve as our official pace car and caution-caller if we ever were to sanction yellow-flag races. While our caution policies could vary a little bit from Hardcore Motorsports, Jes has been operating a caution-flag league for awhile now, and from what I can tell, most of his races go quite smoothly.

Prior to our next series, I think it would be a good idea for us to schedule some caution-flag exhibition races for experimental purposes.

Thoughts, comments, and questions welcomed!
