Terrible inertia

I have only 1 week in Nascar Heat. I had 9 years off since the last time I played this game. I have been practicing with hardcore for 2 hours today! Do you know how hard that is after 9 years off ?! I race into the turns reduce throttle and brake and seem to sling shot to the wall using all car sets. I do not know if I would ever be able to race in the League at this pace 
It is not my stick. It has to be a setting somewhere. I have also completely forgotten about how to modify car set ups for each track. Do you know how frustrating this is! I will not be able to buy a wheel and pedals for quite some time cause I have a pile of bills to catch up on. I will settle for this Saitek stick using the twist action for steering. Should not be a problem.
