Driver wannabe needs info

I'm a rookie who would like to join the fun. At what point do I know I'm ready to race in competition. I'm holding my own against AI drivers, and have a broadband connection.
I have lots of free time cause I'm recouping from back surgery. I've downloaded the 1.72e patch and I'm ready to learn whatever it takes to compete. Thanks for your answers!
