Apple Imac O.S. 8.6

Hey guys. I wanted to know, a family member just was given an imac 8.6. They cannot connect to the internet. They do have service. Ethernet connection/modem. Before they had the service connected to another computer...laptop or labtop if you prefer. If you thought i needed a upgrade, internet explorer 4.5 is the current browser on the system. I was wondering if anybody knew the steps in order for them to get the system connected to the internet. Everything works, they just need to configure something. Just need the steps. Any help will be appreciated.
